In 1898 Trustees of the Abbot Library founded the Historical Society of Marblehead to oversee and preserve an archive of historical documents relating to Marblehead. It was their forethought that led to the purchase of the Jeremiah Lee Mansion and started Marblehead Museum’s extraordinary legacy.
Since then, Marblehead Museum’s collection has grown to three properties and includes extensive collections of Revolutionary War and Civil War relics, J.O.J. Frost and Samuel Chamberlain artwork, historic clothing and artifacts and more. The well-catalogued Archives are a treasure house of personal papers, books, journals, genealogical materials and over 20,000 photographs. The Archives are a resource for histories of the buildings that comprise Marblehead’s townscape, as well as information about Marblehead inhabitants, from Revolutionary War General John Glover to 2004 Olympic Gold Medal cyclist Tyler Hamilton.
