Marblehead
Summer
Whites
Summer is a state of mind, as well as a season.
Marblehead Summer Whites celebrates
the season that
we wait for all year. It remembers summers past even as we
look forward to summer 2006.
White sails, white surf, white clothes, white hats and gloves
all
evoke images of summer by the sea. The new exhibit, presents
paintings, clothing, furniture and decorative arts that are
icons of summer.
Paintings include J.O.J. Frost’s On
the Grand Banks, a ship’s portrait of the Mary
Helen, and photographs of sailing races, promenades at
Fort Sewall, and baseball at Seaside Park.
On display are Victorian and early 20th century
clothing and accessories, including parasols, which were the
quintessential ladies’ summer accessory.
Included in the exhibit will be a recent
acquisition by 19th century American Impressionist John Joseph
Enneking. The oil painting, Marblehead Coast, Massachusetts
was given to the Museum by Morris Cohen, professor emeritus
at MIT, Swampscott resident and Enneking collector. This painting
depicts a Marblehead seaside scene
and is the only one in Cohen’s collection that is of
Marblehead. The rest of his collection was left to the Cape
Cod Museum of Art.
The exhibit is planned in connection with
the exhibit at the Peabody Essex
Museum entitled Painting Summer in New England.
