Celebrating 75 Years
of the Marblehead (M50/800) Class
Model Yachts
Organized by the Marblehead Model Yacht Club (MMYC), the exhibit features models, artifacts, posters and pictures documenting the history of the M-Class model yacht. M-Class stands for “Marblehead” model yacht. The original “M” was envisioned in 1925 by Roy Clough, a founding member of the MMYC, and influenced by an earlier MMYC “450” Sail Area Class model design, developed by noted yacht designer, L. Francis Herreshoff.
“The exhibit will appeal to those interested in yachting history and the role that models play in full-size yacht designs,” explains John Snow of the MMYC. “Individuals who want to understand what modern radio-controlled (R/C) model yacht (sailboat) racing is about will be interested, as well. Museum-goers will see how our own Marblehead design popularized the sport of model yachting world-wide, and learn about the history of organized model yacht racing at Redd’s Pond, which began in 1892.”
